Résumé Writing
15 seconds to capture the reader’s attention. Whether read by another human being or ATS software, key words, accomplishments, industry terminology, and results must be evident. Your résumé needs to convey the full value you bring to the position to which you’re applying – quickly, efficiently, and with impact. Nothing is arbitrary. Everything is a strategic decision.
Are you getting the visibility you deserve?
Many clients – and friends – call me “the question queen.” I ask lots of questions, digging deep to identify what you offer and who you are, to create compelling job search documents.
My résumé writing process includes:
- thorough interview to identify your skills and accomplishments
- research on your target occupation(s), industries, and companies
- recommendation on the most marketable résumé format and style for you
- identification of occupational and industry key words
- application of nationally-recognized guidelines and trends
A Few Words about Accomplishments
Depending on the scope of responsibility and occupational level of the position you’re applying to or networking for, changing the focus and bringing attention to different skills is key. This is particularly true if you are a career changer who needs to re-position skills for a new career path or a new industry. The examples below show alternate ways to communicate the same information using distinctive action words vis-à-vis relevance to the position.
Example 1:
- Directed and implemented innovative initiative to integrate art, education, and community development, raising $100K to support new program.

COVER LETTERS
Cover letters are a critical part of your job search. They complement your résumé and provide the opportunity to customize your presentation to each position and company. Check out one of the most innovative, compelling, and effective examples I’ve ever seen: http://jasonzimdars.com/svn.
Use these three guidelines to create impact and interest – and increase your response rate:
- Make a compelling connection – show that you know their business, mission, and goals by referring to products, services, customers, industry challenges, competitors, or trends. And, include why you are passionate about the company and role.
- Build a bridge – demonstrate through concrete examples how your skills and expertise are directly relevant to the position and a fit for their needs.
- Create an enthusiastic closing – include a brief statement of motivation and express your desire for an interview.
Jason (see above link) simply used these guidelines to communicate: You (the company) are the best. You deserve the best. I’m that guy!
